Died.

This is actually really offensive and not for “religious” reasons.
I’ve seen this on my dashboard numerous times and this time, I can’t just scroll past.
Ontario promotes eating local vegetables and even has a catchy jingle to go along with it. Why? Because wonderful Canadian/Ontarian farmers work hard to provide you with fresh food. Not.
The truth?
Many impoverished Mexican men, with wives and families, migrate to Leamington, Ontario to find work. These men aren’t able to find work so they spend 8 months of the year here. Although this sounds great, the work conditions are very poor and workers often encounter experiences that are hazardous to their health, like spraying pesticides with absolutely no protective gear. Their living conditions consist of run down houses and sometimes 8 men crammed into one room. Along with this, the pay is low and the work isn’t unionized. If the men attempt to speak up about injustices, they know they will be out of work shortly and are easily replaceable. The Mexican Consulate will only accept married men because they want to make sure the workers will return when the 8 months are over.
You may be thinking, well why doesn’t Canada just use local workers? Because they are too expensive to employ. Or, why do they continue to return to the poor conditions? Because they have no work in Mexico and have families to provide for.
tl;dr: Canada abuses migrant workers from Mexico to farm vegetables. They use them for cheap wages and don’t provide safe work conditions.
There’s a good documentary about it all called El Contrato.
