Help Save Mayuran - A 22-yr old Sri Lankan Male
Mayuran was born in 1989 in a small town in Sri Lanka, he migrated to Canada with his family at the age of 4. Mayuran completed his elementary and secondary education in Toronto and was just starting to live life peacefully with many hopes and ambitions. In the summer of 2011 Mayuran noticed a big bruise on his right leg which he thought was from playing basketball. Then a few days later his testicles started to swell and he was rushed to the emergency. Blood tests soon revealed the truth: leukemia. Testing at Princess Margaret Hospital provided him with a definitive diagnosis: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), cancer of the white blood cells.Mayuran has spent a total of 5 months at the Princess Margaret Hospital battling not just leukemia but also anemia, kidney failure and blot clots. His first round of chemotherapy wasn’t successful as it relapsed. A second round of chemotherapy was administered, however he responded with severe fever and infection and he was sent to the ICU at the Mount Sinai Hospital. While in the ICU Mayuran was in very critical condition and was put on oxygen and dialysis. After spending 6 weeks in the ICU, he was transferred back to the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was unable to walk and was in bed-rest for 4 months. Mayuran is now at Bridgepoint Hospital receiving rehab treatments for neuropathic pain so that he can gain the ability to walk again.
In February 2012 Mayuran received devastating news that he is in need of a bone marrow transplant, however there is a very limited donor population among the South Asian community. Ethnic groups are underrepresented in the network and finding the perfect bone marrow donor is quite difficult. Mayuran desperately needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. His best chance is a bone marrow match from a South Asian donor.
So anyone from a South Asian descent who is between 17-50 years old and in generally good health is asked to get a swab test done to identify if they are the right match. Even if you are not from South Asia please donate as you could be the perfect match for another individual battling cancer or other life threatening diseases. If you know someone who is from South Asia please encourage them to get the swab test done also and please pass this message on.
You may be the one to save Mayuran!
All that you need to do right now is a simple mouth swab. In order to register you just have to visit http://www.onematch.comFor people in and around Toronto:

I see me!
Good design: check.
Extremely elitist map excluding most of the poor and/or minority neighborhoods unless they are experiencing gentrification: check.
And I say this every time I see this, but… THERE ARE PLACES FURTHER OUT THAN THAT.
And don’t gimme no “Hermitage is not Nashville” crap, because last I checked, the county and the city are the same thing. If Nashville cops can pull me over in Hermitage, then it’s Nashville.
Thankfully, we have one for Toronto and it’s all the neighbourhoods, not just the gentrified ones.

Black Creek Pioneer Village
I remember few things about the numerous field trips me and my classmates endured at Black Creek Pioneer Village. I remember it being 35 degrees and the entire place smelling like animal shit and oily sunscreen. A bunch of kids got heat stroke and had to take refuge from the sun in the church. Morose history majors and what, from the vantage point of a nine year old, appeared to be ancient women roamed the fields, their historically correct but wholly impractical rough wool and thick linen shirts soaking up their sweat and enthusiasm for re-enactment. I did watch a blacksmith make a horseshoe and a woman work a loom, and I’m fairly certain I did not cry. So I guess it wasn’t a total bust.Rating
6.5/10. I learnt that I’m really fucking happy I’m not a pioneer. This is first in a bunch of TDSB field trip ratings I plan on doing when I’m bored. Hopefully they will be better and longer as time progresses. (photocred)

every girl should have a song like this written about them
ALSO…: I will never not reblog this perfect perfect song either!
City And Colour - “The Girl”
This song* will always remind me of KrisMary and her hubby. It was their wedding song! Oh, I miss them dearly.
I was so happy to be invited to their wedding, and then I was asked to be in the wedding party!
They are the nicest people I have ever met**. I wish I lived on the west coast with them. Oh, I need to go back to BC.
*This song actually makes me weak in the knees. I love it.
**We met on Tumblr! I followed her, she went to a small college where a bunch of my friends went. She knew someone I did and turns out she actually knew my bestie! The rest is history. I love and adore them.

Looking West across the Don Valley, 1912 (before the construction of the Bloor Viaduct)
Today, my grandfather told me that when he was 20, he used to work in Leaside. In order to get to work, he would actually have to do a roundabout way to get there from home.
Why?
Because of the Don Valley River.
(Now, we have the Don Valley Parkway… which doesn’t improve anything…)

eksmalltalk: A Toronto band aims to record their next album with Canadian Tire money. Mmhmm.
This is absolutely amazing. I wish I saved all of my Canadian Tire money!
(For all you non-Canadians, Canadian Tire is a department store that specializes in outdoor, home and cars. When you buy something, they usually give you some “Canadian Tire money”, which is only good at the store, and only 1% of your purchase.)

In Golden Glory of Autumn. Allan Gardens. Toronto (by Katrin Ray)
This is one of my favourite places in Toronto.
It’s a plant conservatory, and absolutely beautiful.

A suspicious fire has destroyed an abandoned farmhouse east of Toronto that contained a room designed to hold someone captive.
The house, on land expropriated by Transport Canada to build a future airport, was slated for demolition. The federal government sent a contractor to inspect it in November. The contractor discovered a confinement room in the basement.
Police won’t say what the room looks like or how it was built, but have said it was constructed recently.
The fire was still smouldering by mid-day Friday, so officials had not been able to check to see if the confinement room had been destroyed.
Investigators are treating it as a suspicious fire and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in.
There was no word on where or how the blaze started.
Police would not say whether they had kept the property under surveillance since making the find in November or what progress had been made in their investigation into the confinement room. It is not known who built the room or whether it was used for criminal activity or for some other purpose, such as shooting a movie.
Neighbours said the home had been abandoned for several years.
The house was listed on Pickering’s heritage register. The local council tried to find someone who could buy the house, move it off the property and restore it.
An assessment of the property last year described the house as being in good condition and structurally sound, and said it contained several historic elements, including barge boards and a centre gable filial.
I know exactly where this house is. A family member owns a dog grooming and kennel nearby.

I just discovered that my favourite Record Store closed months ago...
I went to go pick up a record today and realized that it wasn’t in it’s usual location. At first, I thought it was a relocation, like the one down the street.
This store had great in-store performances and the staff were so nice and friendly. Now I have to start shopping at the snobby one down the street.
Where the Toronto Service cuts are.
A map created by Social Planning Toronto indicates that the budgets cuts proposed by Rob Ford will affect low-income neighbourhoods more so than mid and high-income regions of the city.
Seem fair? No, it doesn’t.
